Class 12 CBSE Electrostatic Potential & Capacitance Theory Practice Worksheet
A clothing manufacturer is experiencing a problem with static electricity in their production process. Garments are sticking together and the workforce is experiencing shocks . What steps can the company take to reduce the static charge ?
Ans : To reduce the static charge , the company must ensure that all equipment such as machines, conveyers and work surfaces are properly grounded. Grounding provides a path for the excess charge to flow to the ground, preventing the buildup of static electricity. Proper grounding techniques include using conductive mats, grounding straps and connecting equipment to grounding wire. Also by using antistatic materials, Humidity control, ionization, lubrication , proper storage and handling and maintenance the company can reduce static charge.
A petrochemical company is experiencing explosion and fires due to static electricity build-up during the transfer of flammable liquids. What measures can the company take to prevent static discharge ?
Ans : The measures to be undertaken by the company are :-
(i) Connect all equipment's, containers , pipelines, to a common ground (for same electrical potential of all of them) and use properly designed and maintained grounding wires, cables for a continuous path or static charges to dissipate safely.
(ii) Use static equipment made from materials that have a low electrical resistance to prevent accumulation.
(iii)Ensure bonding during transfer for tanks, drums.
(iv)Adding static control additives to flammable liquids.
(v)Use insulating flanges / gaskets between piping systems to isolate different sections.
(vi)Limit flow rates, adequate ventilation, and properly verify grounding mechanism.
A hospital is having issues with static electricity affecting medical treatment, causing malfunctions and inaccurate readings. What actions can the hospital take to mitigate this problem?
Ans : The hospital can adopt the following methods :-
(i) Grounding of all the electrical equipment's.
(ii) Using antistatic mats, conductive flooring / antistatic coats.
(iii) Install ionization systems in areas prone to static buildup. Ionizers release ions that neutralize static charges around.
(iv) Shielding of sensitive equipment using conductive materials like fabrics to prevent charge penetration into the equipment.
(v)Ensure that medical equipment is placed away from sources of static electricity , such as friction - generating materials or strong electrostatic fields.
A technology company is experiencing problems with discharge damaging sensitive electronic components during the manufacturing process . How can the company prevent or reduce static electricity ?
Ans .
